Is Online Education for You?

Online education has helped many people get the degrees that they've always wanted. The schedules are flexible, allowing students to "attend" classes at all times of day, no matter what their work schedule is. However, this flexibility might not be good for everyone. Before you sign up for online classes, ask yourself whether you can handle the flexibility of online coursework, or whether you need the structure that a traditional classroom provides.

Are You Self-Motivated?

If you have trouble getting up in the morning, need to be constantly reminded that the project that you are doing for work is due next week, and don't always get your work done on time, you may have trouble in an online classroom environment. In a traditional classroom setting, you know that you have to attend class at a certain time every week, and if you don't turn in your homework when it is due, you have to face a professor with an unhappy look on his face. You may have peers that can encourage you and to set up study groups with. In an online classroom setting, you don't get that outside motivation. You have to be able to manage your course work without having someone remind you when the assignment is due.

Are You Easily Distracted

The internet offers a lot of distractions for people. You may find yourself getting online to look for directions to the nearest drugstore, but end up reading a review on shoe insoles instead. Perhaps you log in to check your email, but thirty minutes later, you still haven't finished reading your email, but you have watched several YouTube clips. If this sounds like you, you could be easily distracted. Completing your online courses is going to take a lot of work, many of it sitting in front of your computer screen. If you are easily distracted, online college might not be right for you. It takes dedication to complete your degree. Unless you can concentrate on the work that needs to be done, you might not be able to do it.

Are You Willing to Make Time for School?

Online education takes a lot of time and work. You may think that, just because you can attend school in your pajamas at any time of day, that online education will be a piece of cake, but it's not. You still have to make time to do the work. You may have to cut a few activities out of your schedule in order to get the work done. If you are willing to make the time to attend college online, you will be able to get the work done. If you think that you can get the work done at lunch or through osmosis, you might want to reconsider whether you are dedicated enough to go back to school at this time.
